When I think of classic New Mexican style hot dogs, I think of the The Dog House on central and Bob’s Burgers. The Dog House has been a staple in the downtown area since the 1960′s. A true city landmark with its animated neon sign. As a kid I remember always wanting to go to the Dog House so I could prove to my dad that I could eat the foot long chile dog without crying. The chile is very hot and is uniquely New Mexican. Their chile is not that meat and bean chili you would find throughout the country or classic red or green. It is like a hot chile gravy. Their hot dogs are spit down the middle and grilled. The favorites at The Dog House are the foot-long chile cheese dog with onions, the double green chile cheeseburger, and the frito pie. I usually always get a foot long chile cheese dong with onions and an order of chile cheese fries. The prices are very reasonable for this wonderful.

The dining room inside is not much bigger then a large closet. I don’t recommend the dining room unless you are wanting to watch them make your order. The way to order is park in the front or on the side facing the restaurant, roll down your window and just look hungry. At some point the carhop will come to your window and take your order. Never go to The Dog House when you are in a hurry, because it is always busy. Also, don’t be expecting to swipe your card here, The Dog House only accepts cash. The Dog House is definitely worth the wait.

Dittos and Bon Apetite! Been eating here since ’69. I recommend that Newbies 1)order a small Orange drink accompaniment (current year is fine) instead of a cola which tends to clash with the shilay taste; 2)order French Fries Petite so that one can use ketchup to cut the shilay heat, 3)eat inside till one learns to hold the bun so one does not drip shilay all over one’s fingers and lap; otherwise request a handful of napkins. Actually, I dine inside all the time as it is fine…it is vintage, but clean Hole-in-the-Wall ambiance. The Suit/ties and Pearls/hose crowd from downtown usually frees up seats after 1. The DH is on old ROUTE66 and about 1-2 miles of the Aquarium, Botanical Gardens, Old Town, the Zoo and I-40. Cheers!!

Love the Dog House…it was one of the first spots my wife took me to back in 1998, on my first trip out to New Mexico. When we lived in Florida we always made a pilgramage back to the DH for a foot-long chile cheese and fries…Now that we are living back here in ABQ we still make regular stops to sit inside and soak up the atmosphere of an Albuqueruqe gone-by. My wife also has s special connection with the DH…her uncle met her aunt at the DH back when her aunt was a 15 year-old carhop there!…almost 40 years ago!!

Mmmm. The Dog House. Bring Cash. I love the chile cheese dogs and chile cheese fries.
Just a note, it is a little weird with the service. It is very small inside and I noticed people sitting in their cars, but wasn’t sure how to order. I walked up to the window but it isn’t actually an order window. Finally, I figured out that you just sit in your car and a “car hop” comes out and takes your order. Maybe a sign explaining that would be nice, but I guess they aren’t hurting for customers. Anyway, it’s worth it, the food is great and the carhop is always very friendly.

Been here once, my friends love the place and go all the time, I was ok with it, the food tasted fine, but I think when I think “chili” dogs I think (as new mexicans put it) Texas Chili, not a hybrid mix (or at least that is what I could only figure out it was). If you like Red Chile on your Dogs, you’re set, great place to eat.

The Dog House is good, but nothing beats Bob’s Burgers on Central!! (Only the Bob’s on Central or Rio Bravo though) Bob’s is by far a better foot long chili dog compared to the Dog House.

Lived there ’95 – 2000. Originally from Houston and grew up on “James Coney Island”. After eating dogs at the dog house for 5 yrs, I’m ruined. The stuff here in Houston has “NO TASTE!!” I’ll be in Alb. for Thanksgiving 2011 and I will be at the DOG HOUSE during my time there. If they are open Thanksgiving day, that may be my “turkey dinner”.
